Bad timing for Marcelo Gallardo with another two injuries at River Plate before the Argentine Super Copa final with Racing Club de Avellaneda. Javier Pinola fractured a bone in his forearm which needed surgery, and Rafael Borré took a painful blow to the iliac crest of the pelvic rim. This is a painful injury because of where the iliac crest is situated. Anatomically, the iliac crest is a bony prominence of the pelvic rim with not a lot of muscle surrounding it for protection. The catch is that several muscles originate on and around the iliac crest that can affect the movements of the hip and lower back. We had to wait for a decision from River’s medics before the game but Rafa passed a late fitness test, played and scored, and was substituted in the 65th minute. Now waiting to see if there is an adverse reaction this morning. Updated, 5th March, 2021.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is one of several high-profile coaches to speak out in favour of football introducing concussion substitutes following the incident described further down the page which resulted in Wolves’ Raúl Jiménez needing surgery on fractured skull. In Raúl’s case, there was no decision to be made other than an emergency removal from the pitch but other cases aren’t quite so clear. Even a simple bump on the head can result in an internal bleed plus everyone tends to forget that facial injuries are also head injuries and should be treated as such. 12th December, 2020

Horrible clash of heads between Raúl Jiménez of Wolves and Arsenal's David Luiz with Raúl taken to hospital right away, where surgery followed. David played on until half-time heavily bandaged to cover a head wound and the club were criticised in the UK media for allowing him to play on until half-time. Arsenal stated that David's injury was a head wound rather than a concussion. Raúl is now recovering, but clearly, concussion is still a major cause for concern. This incident highlights the head injury risks that come with football at a time when repetitive heading linked to dementia is very much to the fore. 29th November, 2020

Andrés Guardado of Real Betis is training this week with the Mexico national team, although Betis coach Manuel Pellegrini says that he will only be carrying on with his rehab protocol while in their care and will not be in contention for any of Mexico’s games. From the coach's aspect, there's not much he can do although I'm sure he would rather have Andrés working at his rehab in Sevilla with the other injured players. It’s not generally known that the National Associations can insist on players joining their training camps even though they are injured in order to let their own medical teams carry out assessments. Betis are powerless as Mexico insist on having Andrés’ present at their training camps, but this is the current situation. It’s the player himself who is taking a bit of flak from the Betis fans as a result. Updated 11th November, 2020
