Boca Juniors' Diego González underwent surgery this week for an injury to the distal tibiofibular syndesmosis with associated ligamentous sprain of the deltoid ligament of the left ankle. This can be a complicated injury, often referred to as a ''high ankle sprain''. 17th January, 2021.
On the same day, Ramón Abila, also of Boca, underwent surgery for a bilateral ''footballer's hernia''. 17th January, 2021.
Still in Argentina, Iván Tapia is out of Barracas Central’s squad with an injury to the quadriceps muscles in his left thigh. Colleague and teammate Gonzalo Rehak has an injury to the glenoid labrum of the shoulder. 14th January, 2021.
Nahuel Iribarren of Club Atlético Platense in Argentina has been ruled out for several weeks with a tear of the soleus muscle in his left calf. 13th January, 2021.
In Italy, X-rays and MRI scans confirmed that Matteo Darmian’s injury was severe bruising to the iliac crest of the pelvic bone, sustained in Inter’s game against Roma. 10th January, 2021
Meanwhile, Sandro Tonali and Brahim Díazboth picked up injuries in AC Milan’s victory over Torino, with the latter limping heavily as he was substituted. On the brighter side for Milan, Zlatan Ibrahimović returned to the team after being for the best part of two months with thigh and calf injuries. 9th January, 2021
Fabián Sánchez of Racing Club de Avellaneda has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Surgery and the standard 6 – 8 months rehab are set to follow. 8th January, 2021.
Gabriel Silva missed St. Etienne’s draw with PSG in midweek although he’s reported to be recovering well from a knee injury. He wasn’t deemed ready to face Mauricio Pochettino’s Parisian side, still minus Neymar with an ankle injury. 7th January, 2021
Fabrizio Angileri has re-joined training at River Plate after being out recently with a hamstring muscle injury. 7th January, 2021
In England, Wolves’ Daniel Podence is expected to be out for several weeks following a calf injury sustained in the game against Manchester United. However, Leander Dendoncker (knee) and Willy Bolly (hamstring) are both back in training. 5th January, 2021
Marc Roca, Joshua Zirkzee, Kingsley Coman, and Bouna Sarr are all back in training this week at Bayern Munich after recovering from their various injuries. However, Serge Gnabry’s return date remains doubtful after sustaining a contact injury against Mainz at the weekend. 4th January, 2021
It’s already happened this season to Sevilla goalkeeper Tomáš Vaclík at Chelsea in December, and now it’s West Ham 'keeper Łukasz Fabiański who has sustained an injury in the warm-up. It happened before the Hammer’s game against Everton on New Year’s Day, and Darren Randolph substituted. 2nd January, 2021
Paulo Díaz will be having treatment this week at River Plate for a synovitis of the right hip, which is an inflammation of the membrane that lines the joint. How quickly Paulo recovers from this will determine when he returns to training. 28th December, 2020.
Marcelo Gallardo hasn't named Ignacio Fernández in River Plate's squad for the Copa Libertadores game v Nacional in Montevideo on Thursday, proving that injuries don't always fit neatly into boxes in terms of severity, nature, and recovery time. Nacho will continue treatment instead. He sustained a back injury against Argentinos on Sunday night and had to be substituted early in the match. Updated 15th December, 2020.
James Rodríguez missed Everton’s game against Chelsea due to a calf problem sustained in the match at Burnley recently. Carlo Ancelotti thinks that some of his problems are due to travelling a lot to be with the Colombian national team this season. Carlo thinks this started with an injury after the game against Liverpool and one thing led to another. James is expected to train this week. 13th December, 2020
It’s not only muscular problems that force players to miss matches though. Rodolfo Zelaya at Alianza in San Salvador has been diagnosed with a folliculitis of the toe. Folliculitis is simply an inflammation of the hair follicles but anything that affects a footballer’s feet is likely to be problematic. This will keep Rodolfo out of training and playing for approximately two weeks. 13th December, 2020
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is one of several high-profile coaches to speak out in favour of football introducing concussion substitutes following the incident described further down the page which resulted in Wolves’ Raúl Jiménez needing surgery on fractured skull. In Raúl’s case, there was no decision to be made other than an emergency removal from the pitch but other cases aren’t quite so clear. Even a simple bump on the head can result in an internal bleed plus everyone tends to forget that facial injuries are also head injuries and should be treated as such. 12th December, 2020
West Ham United will be without Michail Antonio for several games as the striker has sustained another hamstring muscle injury. This is something that Michail has suffered with in the past and similar hamstring injuries have forced him to miss several games as a result. Still in East London, Michail’s team mate Arthur Masuaku has recently undergone a knee arthroscopy so he’s expected be out of action until the new year at least. 11th December, 2020
Several injuries reported in the women’s game in Argentina last week, and sadly these are along the usual lines. Luna Irigoyen of Estudiantes de La Plata sustained an ACL injury to her left knee and is set for surgery as a result. Johanna Gallioti, also of Estudiantes, dislocated her left elbow. 11th December, 2020
Daiana Gómez of Rosario Central was another player to sustain an ACL tear, this time accompanied by meniscus damage. She’s also due for surgery in the near future. 10th December, 2020
Arsenal, the Argentine side that is, reported that Alan Ruíz has sustained an injury to an adductor muscle in his left hip and groin. Also, at Arsenal, Alan’s team-mate Emiliano Papa has picked up a muscular injury to his right calf. Return to training for both players will obviously depend on their response to treatment. 10th December, 2020
Leonel Di Placido of Lanús in Argentina is yet another player to have torn his ACL recently, and he too will be having surgery to reconstruct this. It’s not so much having the operation itself that can be the issue nowadays, it’s more the fact that the average rehab period takes around 8 – 9 months barring any complications. 8th December, 2020
Arturo Vidal of Inter Milan sustained an injury to his right thigh with Inter Milan and missed the Champions League match against Shakhtar Donetsk as a result. 7th December, 2020

Horrible clash of heads between Raúl Jiménez of Wolves and Arsenal's David Luiz with Raúl taken to hospital right away, where surgery followed. David played on until half-time heavily bandaged to cover a head wound and the club were criticised in the UK media for allowing him to play on until half-time. Arsenal stated that David's injury was a head wound rather than a concussion. Raúl is now recovering, but clearly, concussion is still a major cause for concern. This incident highlights the head injury risks that come with football at a time when repetitive heading linked to dementia is very much to the fore. 29th November, 2020
A knee in the back from Paraguay's Ángel Romero resulted in a fractured lumbar vertebrae for former River Plate's Exequiel Palacios, now at Bayer Leverkusen.
He'll be out of action for a minimum of three months. 15th November, 2020.
Neymar will miss Brazil’s Qatar World Cup Qualifier next week against Uruguay due to an adductor muscle strain. Like Andrés Guardado’s situation with Mexico (see below), Brazil wanted Neymar to attend their training camp, despite being injured with PSG. 12th November, 2020
Andrés Guardado of Real Betis is training this week with the Mexico national team, although Betis coach Manuel Pellegrini says that he will only be carrying on with his rehab protocol while in their care and will not be in contention for any of Mexico’s games. From the coach's aspect, there's not much he can do although I'm sure he would rather have Andrés working at his rehab in Sevilla with the other injured players. It’s not generally known that the National Associations can insist on players joining their training camps even though they are injured in order to let their own medical teams carry out assessments. Betis are powerless as Mexico insist on having Andrés’ present at their training camps, but this is the current situation. It’s the player himself who is taking a bit of flak from the Betis fans as a result. Updated 11th November, 2020
Romelu Lukaku of Inter Milan picked up a minor thigh injury during the match against Shakhtar Donetsk in midweek and will not be available when Inter take on Parma this weekend. Inter are hoping he will recover in time for the v Champions League match v Real Madrid on Tuesday. 30th October, 2020
River Plate coach Marcelo Gallardo has tested negative for Covid and has already taken the training since learning his result. He didn’t waste any time in ending his period of self-isolation! 30th October, 2020
Neymar sustained a thigh injury in PSG’s win over Istanbul Basaksehir and now faces an uncertain time while awaiting to discover the full extent of the injury. 29th October, 2020
After losing Virgil Van Dijk to knee surgery last week, Liverpool now have Fabinho struggling with a hamstring injury. The Brazilian defender was substituted during the first half of Liverpool’s game against Midtjylland earlier in the week. 28th October, 2020
Esteban Andrada of Argentine club Boca Juniors has sustained an injury to the soleus muscle of his left calf. Progress will be monitored over the next few days for an accurate impression of when he’s likely to be fit. 27th October, 2020
In Uruguay, Fabricio Fernándaz of Atlético Progreso suffered a facial fracture of the malar bone in a training accident this week, when he was involved in a collision with a teammate. The injury required surgery, which is normal for cheekbone fractures, and Fabricio will be out for a while. 27th October, 2020.
Missing from River Plate's training after the CONMEBOL Libertadores win against Liga de Quito in Avellaneda was Jorge Moreira. He's still recovering from an injury to the rectus femoris muscle of his right thigh. 22nd October, 2020.
In England, Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk is set for knee surgery after sustaining an ACL injury in the Merseyside derby last weekend. The club are hoping that the full extent of the injury will be revealed after the operation. Meanwhile, James Rodriguez will miss Everton’s game this weekend against Southampton due to an injury sustained in a tackle with Virgil. 22nd October, 2020.
In Mexico, Nicolás Benedetti requires surgery on a meniscus injury to his right knee sustained in a first-half tackle in Club América’s game v Léon on Monday. He will be out of action for the standard 6 weeks or so, which is bad news for the Colombian midfielder as he’s only recently returned to play after a lengthy period of injury. 21st October, 2020.
In Argentina, Huracán's César Ibáñez has sustained a triad injury to his right knee. This consists of injuries to the ACL, meniscus, and collateral ligament. Surgery is set to follow. 12th October, 2020
Santi Arias, currently at Bayer Leverkusen on loan from Atlético Madrid, sustained a horrific fracture dislocation of the left ankle the other night in Colombia's game with Venezuela. Ongoing treatment will be handled in Madrid.
It's not been the best of weeks for Argentine club Arsenal de Sarandí who have a few injuries to contend with. Jhonathan Candia and Ramiro Balbuena are out with hamstring muscle injuries while Leonel Picco has an adductor injury. 10th October, 2020.
Over at River Plate, coach Marcelo Gallardo will be delighted with the return of Benjamín Rollheiser following ACL surgery at the start of the year. Benjamin played in River's friendly with Newell's on Friday, 9th October, 2020.
In Chile, Universidad will be without Franco Lobos for the next 6- 8 months. Having torn the ACL in his right knee, Franco is set for surgery and the lengthy rehab that follows. 8th October, 2020.
River Plate are without Jorge Carrascal in training this week, having sprained his left knee on Tuesday morning. He missed the midweek Libertadores match against Sao Paulo at Independiente's stadium in Avellaneda. River are playing their home games there while the pitch at the Monumental is being relaid.
Francisco Pizzini is out of Defence and Justice's Libertadores game against Olimpia of Paraguay on the 23rd September, having torn a hamstring muscle in the match against Delfín of Equador last week.
Andrés Herrera of San Lorenzo suffered a fracture of the fibula in training this week and was immediately placed in a short plaster boot pending a decision on whether this injury needs surgical intervention or not. That decision will be taken by the San Lorenzo medical team over the next few days.
Still in Argentina, Racing Club de Avellaneda named both Lisandro López and Matías Rojas for their Libertadores match against Nacional of Uruguay. Matías played and Lisandro started on the bench. Both had pulled out of training earlier in the month with rectus femoris muscle injuries of the thigh but recovered in time for the game. However, Matías Zaracho has since tested positive for COVID - 19.
Dani Alves has been ruled out of the first São Paulo-River Plate game in the
on Sept 17 after breaking a bone in his arm.
Ramón Ábila at Boca Juniors has sustained a rectus femoris muscle strain of the thigh. He will be out of action for a few weeks as a result of this injury.
Amid all the celebrations in Lisbon the other night, there were the inevitable injuries. Jérôme Boateng of Bayern Munich suffered a hamstring muscle injury that forced him to leave the field. He'll be evaluated by the Munich medical team and will follow the usual treatment protocols for muscular injuries.
Club América have only just got Nicolás Benedetti back from injury and now they're losing Bruno Valdez with a combined anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury to his left knee.
Racing Club de Avellaneda (Argentina) have two key players injured as they look ahead to their Libertadores match against Nacional of Uruguay in mid-September. Lisandro López and Matías Rojas both pulled out of training earlier in the week with rectus femoris muscle injuries of the thigh, which were both confirmed as minor strains following investigations. The two players are expected to recover within the appropriate time-frame for injuries of this nature, but since no two injuries are ever the same, we’ll have to wait and see. Their progress will be monitored by Racing’s medical team.
Jorge Carrascal becomes the third player on River Plate's current injury list this week. He's picked up a rectus femoris muscle injury of the thigh. The other two being Benjamin Rollheiser (ACL) and Paulo Díaz with a calf injury.
At Club América in Mexico this week, Nicolás Benedetti was given the medical discharge after a long lay-off with a cruciate ligament injury sustained in February of this year. The injury occurred while on international duty with the Colombia national team in February during the final match against Uruguay in the South American Pre-Olympic Tournament. Nico's had a few injuries at América, including a fractured fifth metatarsal bone of the foot, so let's hope that he can now stay injury-free for a while.
Former Real Madrid goalkeeper, Keylor Navas, is reported to have sustained a thigh muscle injury and will miss PSG’s Champions League semi-final against Red Bull Leipzig.
In Uruguay, Matías Jones was stretchered off the field in Danubio’s match against River Plate (Uruguay) in Montevideo on the 8th August, 2020, with a dislocated patella and is expected to be out of action for around eight weeks. Matías’ knee will be immobilsed in a brace for three weeks before beginning intensive rehabilitation with the club’s medical staff.
The first proper injury of the pre-season River Plate (Argentina) was sustained by Paulo Díaz, who injured his right calf muscle injury in training on the 18th August, 2020. Anticipated training time lost will be roughly two - three weeks.
Missing from the opening day of pre-season at River Plate on August 10th were Benjamín Rollheiser, who is currently deep into his ongoing ACL rehabilitation schedule following surgery last February and Gonzalo Montiel, self-isolating at that time after a positive serological COVID test while awaiting swab results. The results came back negative so Gonzalo joined the full squad 48 hours later.
River Plate coach Marcelo Gallardo planned the day to allow for the players being divided up in order to train in 6 separate groups. There were only two groups in at a time on a staggered rota, with two groups training at 9.30 in the morning, two at 10.30, and the final two groups in at 11.30 am. This allowed the club to follow the protocols and for the coaches to work with small groups in order to minimise the risk of close contact.
